Hi.

I don't know how the 100 watt amplifiers fare, but I had a lot of trouble
with parasitics that kept popping the output transistor on my old Mirage
B23 amplifier, and at the price of Motorola MRF240 transistors, that got
expensive in a hurry. I never could get that amp tamed down. It is the
only one of the Mirage amps that I had a problem with, though.

zI also liked the RF Concepts amps that Kantronics had. I'm not sure that
they are still around, but the preamp was somewhat nicer than the preamps
in the Mirage amps. I can't reall contribute much on the tube amps--I
never had one.

However, my question to Rick would be "Are you looking for the antenna for
SSB or FM?" If SSB, you probably want to look at something more like a
halo (or the square version cqalled the Squalo), or a Turnstile antenna, or
perhaps the Eggbeater antenna (also known as the Texas Potato
Masher). Most of these antennas can be built, or you can probably find
commercial versions of at least some of them if you look around. What
these antennas do is give you an omni-directional antenna with horizontal
polarization. You'll want horizontal polarization for SSB.

If FM is your thing, take a look at some of the Jetstream antennas--they
give good gain, and they are less expensive than some of the big names, and
people that I've talked to seem to like them. Just one word of
caution: If you start playing with the really big amps, watch the power
ratings on your antennas. Most of the commercially made verticals have a
maximum power limit of between 120 watts and 200 watts depending upon the
manufacturer and model.
