<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>>
As a review - I inquired earlier this week if anyone else is using the newest generic version of Simvastatin made by Aurobindo. And if so, did they know if it is GF. I received 9 responses and none used the Aurobindo version as best as I could tell (and I did follow-up e-mails to each respondent.)
What I have since learned is that there are at least 3 companies making Simvastatin. Most of the people who responded to me seem to use the same generic I used to receive; i.e. an oval, peach pill - mine came from Cadila Health Care ( from India) and had ZA-21 on it. This pill has been GF.
The new pill I received is made by Aurobindo, a different company based in India. This new pill is round, a very pale peach and has an "A" on one side and "02" on the other. I e-mailed Aurobindo on Tuesday but have yet to hear back from them. The only telephone number on their website is one in India - which I do not plan to call.
My pharmacist initially indicated the Cadila pill was no longer available. He now thinks he may be able to get a small supply- just for me. The pharmacy I go to is in a hospital and they changed suppliers as the Aurobindo pill is less expensive for them than the Cadila version. (I provided the pharmacist with a pamphlet about gluten in medications as he seemed totally unaware of the issue despite me emphasizing on previous visits why I needed to be cautious.)
If and when I receive a response from Aurobindo, I will share it via Listserv. In the meantime, if someone else receives more clear cut information about the inert ingredients than I was able to gather, ( i.e. "starches") please let all of us know.
Thank you to the people who responded to my initial request for help. I truly appreciate it.
Gabriele
