A new laser confocal microscopic probe has been developed by Mauna
Kea Technologies which works in conjuction with conventional
endoscopes providing realtime video sequences of the intestinal
mucosa magnified 500-1000 times greater than the conventional
endoscopic view. Both normal endoscopic image and confocal images
are available simultaneously, allowing the confocal probe to be visually
positioned with the endoscope. This system allows for an immediate
diagnosis and eliminates the need to take and prepare intrusive
biopsy samples. The new system is an improvement over previously
available laser confocal endomicroscopy systems, being easier and
more intuitive to use. The Mauna Kea Technologies website provides a
detailed description of the device.
