thanks everyone for the helpful responses regarding how to eat at chain type restaurants when travelling and eating out spontaneously:
    I found---

most people avoid and do not trust Applebees and many avoid Panera

some responses suggested always carry a computer or PDA  (too cumbersome, not practical for spontaneous eating out)

several suggestedcooking pasta etc. at home before going out anywhere & carry it along (not spontaneous eating out with a group)

several stated they eat onlya lettuce tomato salad

one suggestion said smothered chicken at Applebees was gluten free.
