MK,
All the PT's I've worked with (probably largely for
insurance/reimbursement reasons) get a referral from a doc (or nurse
practitioner, or PA - someone with prescriptive authority), and design a
therapy program based on that referral. I've had really good luck, as
the first PT and OT I worked with extensively were after a brain injury
that left me paralyzed on my left side, on top of my CP, which affected
primarily my right side, and hydrocephalus.
Kendall
shunted for hydrocephalus at 6 months of age in 1961, left hemiplegia,
shunt free, through "the miracles of modern medicine" since 1978.
Married to Janet for 9 wonderful years in July.
An unreasonable man (but my wife says that's redundant!)
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one
persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all
progress depends on the unreasonable man.

I mean the doctors are supposed to refer you to the PTs with a
statement of diagnosis and their PT recommendations. The specifics
are up to the PTs.
So to be so short, but I have to leave for work in 30 minutes --
have good day, everyone!

that's interesting - mine have all worked on their own. in 2 cases I
got referrals, but the doctors (I ended up switching primary care
doctors) referred me and let the PTs do their thing. I can't
remember if I complained about PT to the first doctor, but I did to
the second doctor. His reaction was to tell me that the PTs were the
experts and that I should complete the course of treatment and then
they would write him a letter and he would review it with me, and if
there were problems, he would discuss at that point. Since I felt it
wasn't helping, I wasn't willing to keep going back for a month.
I guess technically, they were working with my doctors because the
doctors were informed, but in reality, they were independent of
advice/suggestions from my doctors once I was referred. Is that what
you mean about that's how it's supposed to work?
