Good question, Jim. Popular articles along with the onslaught of advertising
editorials focus on protein requirement in terms of tissue building or
protein synthesis. These days, an oft repeated study involving undergraduate
students (neo-hamsters in labs) reports that 20 gms of protein is max for
hypertrophy. That's what a Canadian anthropologist deems 'stupid science.'
Protein has extended application in human physiology. Broken down in the GI
track and absorbed as amino acids, various enzymes and other enzyme like
biochemicals stimulate a vast cascade of applications including hormone
development, various huge polpeptides, DNA, etc. As such, exercise recovery
studies rather speciously scratch the surface, mistaking muscle cellular
protein synthesis requirement for whole systm requirementsl Do you simply
refuel your car, or actively maintain all it's systems? By analogy, that's
what we're looking at.
