Well thanks everyone - I got lots of feedback & found that most everyone tsuccessfully uses a different approach to reflux & heartburn, etc. here's a summary-

2 people take - chewable pepcid
1 - pepcid 10 mg.
1 gaviscon, charcoal & zantac
2 take aciphex & 1- aciphex +rolaids, & 1 aciphex + aloe vera juice
2 use satsuma fruits & a spoonful of vinegar w/sugar
1 rolaids chewable + zantac
1 rolaids
3 prilosec
1 takes only pepcid AC & was told that is the only GF type of pepcid
2 Gaviscon extra & 1 of those also uses the walmart brand of gaviscon-like compound
1 nexium
1 Tums plain (& said its the only GF Tums)
1 generic omeprazole
1 peppermint
1 300mg Ratio Rantadine
1 person had taken zantac & it caused internal bleeding & prolonged her gut healing time from celiac damage. She now uses papaya, or pineapple or cantalope 30 min. before meals and a little lactaid milk or water.

My GI specialist prescribed pepcid which I took for 5 yrs. then my internalist switched me to protonix & then the rheumatologist next put me on aciphex for the past 5 yrs. However, while on ACIPHEX the past yr. I've been experiencing severe diarrhea, vomiting, gut pain in the upper gut as well as the large intestine. My hair was falling out & nails lifted off. I was able to eat only small pieces of GF toast, applesauce, no fats, no fibers & I lost 30 lbs. My GI's & family Drs. had no answers for me, & a MI State Univ. GI specialist ran blood tests & urine tests which indicated I had elevated gastrins possibly causing pancreatic tumors & also a 5HIAA test suggested tumors in the small intestine. When these tests were repeated they were inconclusive. This Dr. also mentioned that aciphex causes the same type of response. So I stopped taking Aciphex & the pain gradually resided over 6 wks., I gradually added meats, fruits & veg. a tspn. at a time & after 3 mo. am eating fresh fruits, veg. & meat again, my hair is not falling out &, my nails are growing.

Since I also have C.R.E.S.T. scleroderma in addition to celiac, my rheumatologists had said I should never go without these proton pump inhibitor pills, but I will be very skeptical from now on.

I now chew a generic type of tums, as needed, that I buy at Sams Club & occasionally take the Sams Club brand of Pepcid tablet, wich I verified by calling the Mfr. They advised I needed to verify this before ea. purchase, as ingredients may change.

I also emailed Johnson & Johnson/Merck pharma. for gluten info on the various pepcid remedies on the market. they advised I must telephone them for info. Here's what they told me on the phone:

Pepcid AC 10 mg. tablet - TESTED GF
Pepcid complete chewable mint - TESTED GF

Pepcid chewable berry complete - not tested
Maximum Strength pepcid AC 20 mg. - not tested
Pepcid ez chews berries & cream - not tested
Pepcid AC 10 mg. gelcap - not tested.

Hope this info helps. Mary from MI
