Hi.

I was aware that there were some issues with the 7400, but I thought they 
were related to being able to set the contrast.

I have been avoiding HP Scanners like the plague.  The Canon scanners seem 
to work quite nicely.  I have a Canon LIDE 600F at work that works like a 
champ.
