Tom,
Since I don't own a 480 I can only speak in general terms. Your rig should
have a rs-232 connector on it ( I don't think Kenwood has gone USB yet).
Connecting this to the pc with no other interface or device will allow
your logging software to get freq and mode from rig. You can use programs
for rig control and memory/menu management such as Ham Radio Deluxe, TRX
manager, or the free download programs from the Kenwood site. The JAWS
friendliness of these programs is another subject, but only a serial
connection is needed. You can also back up and restore settings to the
radio that were lost in a radio reset or alien sabotage. Your logging
software may allow more than just freq and mode input.
The sound card interface is another ball of wax. It gets the received
audio from radio to pc for decoding and then gets whatever digital output
generated by the software back to the radio for transmit. All interfaces
are not the same and some allow cw tx while others don't. I think some
rigs allow cw keying through the serial port, not sure about the 480. For
less than 20 bucks at Dayton you can buy a serial to cw keying interface.
The one I have connects to a serial port on the pc and plugs into the key
jack on the 2000 allowing sending keyboard cw and macros from within the
logging software. Again, the interface you already have may already do
this. The soundcard interface is what will let you do psk, and digital
voice among other stuff.
That's enough to chew on for now. Have fun in Dayton.
