Tom,
It looks like Bob is doing just what you want to do, so it must be doable.
Again, just be careful and check all connections and polarities before you
put power to anything. I like having my fuses in a central location on the
Rigrunner, but to each his own.
There is some voltage drop involved with all this stuff and in the Power
Gate as well due in large part to the diode that prevents battery power from
feeding back into the power supply. Voltage drop can be reduced somewhat by
using heavy gauge wire as short as possible. The Astron linear supply I
use has an internal adjustment to raise the output voltage a bit and this
can also help compensate. While the automatic switch over from ps to
battery is nice, it's not so important to me. What I really like is the
built in battery charger that will charge at a max of 10 amps from the
power supply, so no extra charger or cables needed to keep the battery
charged.
Hope to see you in the contests this spring. I plan to put in a nice effort
in this weekend's Virginia QSO party. I'm close enough that I have a nice
signal on 40, 80, and 160 into VA. Also looking forward to WPX SSB at the
end of the month.
