Hi Alan,
BEFORE you do ANYTHING ,please READ this FIRST:
Determine if the laptop is strictly a 64 bit machine. If it is ,the following advice re EasyBCD will not work!
IOW, are 32 bit drivers available for the hardware? (This is assuming that the version of XP is 32 bit ,being the most common version of it.)
You will need to install hardware drivers on XP after its installation.
Not having 32 bit drivers will exclude installing XP on this laptop.
The easiest way is to follow the advice on this page
http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/EBCD/Installing+XP+After+Vista+or+7
I have done this several times ,back and forth ,whichever was the last install.
Things to keep in mind:
Prepare ,prepare, prepare ! and carefully read the instructions.
1 Install EasyBCD on the Win7 partition. Read all instructions and get familiar to what it can do.
2.Create a new partition for XP.Give it a name.(Label it) Write down the size of that partition.
After XP is installed, install EasyBCD on XP. (At this point you cannot boot into Win7 anymore )
Follow instructions as to restore Win7 BCD.
If one pays attention ,it's a snap.
