I received some additional help with regards to the GF food tax deduction I thought I would pass on:

***************************************************************************************

I built an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of mine. It is set up like this:
ItemPriceReg. PriceDifferenceUnits TotalMiles

I used the per ounce price to calculate the difference. You can also deduct the mileage to and from the store. Be sure and save your receipts.
I only itemize every other year as I bunch my deductions.
And, yes, it¢s subject to the same AGI levels as any other medical expense, so it wouldn¢t count unless you had other big medical expenses that year. The year I deducted everything, I had three tooth implants at $3,300 a pop and also bought eyeglasses. If you pay a lot in health insurance and don¢t have a large income, then it might be worth your while.

****************************************************************************************

If your company has flex-spending plan you can put away money pre-tax to cover the difference, then submit receipts for reimbursement. You end up with about 25% or so savings on the food.

***************************************************************************************

I do write off the food expense every year and it is a benefit to me. I have 2 people in the household that are celiac so for me it is worth the work to keep receipts and add up, etc. My family is a sickly family so we have alot of out of pocket medical expenses as well. You can also write off the gas it takes to get to the GF stores, etc. But you are correct, you must do the long form and you must have enough medical to even sit down and consider adding up all the expenses that are there. (Remember that you buy GF spices, meats, etc. that can be more than the average person's - these add up as well.).
