Hi Becky
I developed hyperthyroidism this past June after complications from surgery
(hysterectomy). My previous thyroid bloodwork had always been normal. After
surgery, I became incredibly symptomatic. Resting pulse 140, short of breath,
shaking all over, and panic attacks! I was perspired all the time, and
couldn't think. I don't think I've ever felt so awful in my life.
My labs showed a non-existent TSH (.001), Total T3 600, and Total T4 19.8.
The endocrinologist immediately put me on a beta blocker and Tapazole. I did
eventually begin to feel improvement, but like you, didn't like the thought of
having to take those meds (especially the tapazole). I ultimately chose the
RAI...had it done in August.
Right now, I'm doing well...all of those horrible symptoms are gone...and
based on a recent thyroid uptake and scan, I'm euthyroid. If it could stay like
this....it would be great! Recent blood work shows Free T3 and T4 in normal
range. My TSH is only .17...I'm thinking it takes a while for this number to
get more into a normal range.
So far, so good. BUT....about a month ago, my eyes started to bother me.
Irritated...tearing. And then, all the tissue around my eyes started swelling.
I went to an opthalmologist, who thinks it may be due to my Graves. I went
for a CT scan today...and am waiting for results. If it is from the
Graves....is this brought on by the RAI??? I have an appointment with my endo on
Monday..and will be asking lots of questions. I also had an ultrasound today...I
still have a cold, non-functioning nodule that he wanted to follow-up on. I
think, if it's bigger than 1cm, they want to do a fine needle biopsy.
I will let you know what I find out after my appointment. Good luck with
making a decision.
