Dana,

Ativan is in the benzodiazapine class of drugs. In a nutshell, they are
CNS (central nervous system) depressants that sort of slooooow down
neurological activity. Some are used as sedatives (anxiolytics), others
are indeed used for their tendency to diminish spasticity. Klonipin
(Clonazepam) is one of the newer of these drugs, and is used for
everything from controlling anxiety to moderating spasticity and
controlling seizures.
