conilius ,well thanks for showing a keen interest in gambian affairs. the
akus as both malanding and sanusi puts it are not part of the equation
here.
the camaras are also mostly non-to be of the free class but needless some
arears have camaras that are in the lower cast .
i am short of time now but some writers may elaborate further. god bless.
the quranic quotation is also not the issue.
all three monothiese religion have passages in their holy books with
reference to slave issue ,because this was a subject at that time but it
is all in a particular context.islam for one encourages muslims to free
their slaves and there are several rewards associated with freeing a slave
example after a man deflower a woman who is not his spouse ,he need to
free a slave for expiation of that sin and many others.there are numerous
books written about slave subject in islam .yet many areas like
mauritania, niger practice appauling practices of slavery base of
islam.this shows there ignorance and backwardness.many brothers in the u.s
accepted islam on the pretex of its message on equality of men.
i enjoyed the links you provided thank you.as you know ,cast system is a
big economic empire. making some body work for free.
salvery is not happening per say in the gambia but people of slave
decendant may be denied the love of his life just becaues the man or woman
is from the lower cast .
the griots mostly marry among themself ,so as the leather workers or
karankes ,the blacksmiths and so on.
wealth can elavate some but still if you want to marry another woman of a
different class ,it will not happen unless it is in arears where the
system is not known.
educations is also of similar standing. dk jawara is of the leather
working class but he became the president .the jolas where not the most
resistant to islam ,they where reluctant at some point but the most
resistant are the manjakos.
suntou.
