We have eaten at the Outback in Bellevue, WA. for many years with no
incident. Tonight changed all that. We ordered our "normal" (steak,
baked potato, steamed broccoli, and a Cesare salad)and explained to the
waitress that **everything** had to be gluten free..please wipe out the
salad bowl, etc. The dinner came and I took one bite of the broccoli (my
daughter had already eaten hers) and could taste seasonings. I asked the
waitress what was on the broccoli and she said butter and seasonings. I
asked if it was gluten free and she said she didn't know ..returned and
said the broccoli had gluten on it via the seasonings BUT it was all my
fault because I didn't order off the gluten free menu.

The manager explained to us that the kitchen does not know gluten free
from beans and it is up to the waitress to tell the kitchen "no
seasonings" and "no croutons " etc. Furthermore the waitress needs to
have the gf menu in front of her in order to read the instructions on
the menu in order to tell the kitchen what to do. Again they reiterated
that it was **my fault** for not pointing to the steamed broccoli on the
gf menu.

What concerns me the most is that the kitchen does not know what gf
means . I have a real issue with possible cross contamination exposure
if the kitchen does not understand what gluten free means. So most likely
my daughter and I will be very sick and Outback's response what that it
was our fault for not pointing to the specific item (steamed broccoli)
on the gf menu.
