In a case study, a 34 year old woman suffered "recurrent episodes 
of abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhoea and sometimes angioedema of 
the lips" within 2 hours of ingesting packaged foods.  Tests for 
common food allergies were negative, but tests for food 
preservatives and fragrances used in flavorings were positive.  
The woman's problem was determined to be caused by an allergy to 
fragrances and was solved by avoiding any processed food labelled 
with "flavorings".  Celiacs who suspect they have been "glutened" 
should consider that food additives and flavorings that do not 
contain the common food allergens requiring FDA package labels are 
also possible causes of food allergies before blaming gluten.
