I suspect the basic problem is that Open Book 8 now uses Eloquence as the
speech synth and has been optimized to work well with JAWS. Up through Open
Book 7.2, they used ViaVoice. I upgraded from Open Book 7.2 to 8 and had
no problem. I ignored the instruction to un-install the earlier version
though as I always like to have two versions available just in case
something like what you describe happens. Currently both work fine, but as
I have tweaked version 8, it has been handy to have version 7.2 a couple of
times when I needed to get something done now and had trouble with version
8.

Suggestions:
1. Don't just talk with Freedom Scientific. The problem is probably
conflicts between Open Book 8 and Window Eyes. So they may be able to help
also.

2. You might consider reinstalling your old version of Open Book to get you
by while you figure this all out. They can both exist on the same system.

3. Though version 8 is an improvement, it isn't that much of one over
version 7.2. As a last resort you could probably get version 7.2 which
should be just as compatible as your old version.

This kind of stuff is always frustrating, and Freedom Scientific has never
supported Open Book very well. Probably because they didn't create it, just
bought it. Hope this helps.
Bill

Subject: [VICUG-L] asking input of peoples" experiences with open book
problem

Hi all,

I feel that it is time I come out here and ask if anyone has been in the
same situation with having an open book problem as I am having.

I use windows xp, window eyes 6.1, and open book. Up until a couple of days
ago I had open book 5 and I was doing fine with it. Then I purchased the
latest version of open book which is 8. I uninstalled the 5 and then
installed the 8. Well, from that point on open book does not open or work
at all. It just gives error messages wanting to send error reports. I am
in contact with Freedom Scientific and have tried to repair open book. Plus
I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it a couple times, but still the same
result. The bottom line is that there is still some sort of conflict, but
Freedom Scientific hasn't figured out what it is yet. I was wondering why
all of a sudden this is happening and they said that in version 8 the speech
drivers are different or something.

I was just wondering if anyone on here has been in the same situation before
when they upgraded with open book and if so what you did about the conflict.
I would appreciate hearing anyone's experiences. I don't know if it will
come down to the fact that there is a solution to this or not. I guess I
may have to see if I can go back to an earlier version that will work and
just live with that or spend an exorbitant amount of money on something to
scan like Kurzweil or whatever. Thanks so much.

Lisa
