Dear friends,

Will you break the silence for Congo? One way to help break the silence is to turn your cell phones off from 12-6pm today to raise awareness about illegal mineral exploitation in the Congo!! NO TEXTING! You may change your voicemail temporarily to reflect this message

“Did you know that Congo has anywhere from 64 - 80 percent of the world's reserve of Coltan, a natural resource that is central to the operation of our cell phones? As we benefit from coltan nearly 6 million Congolese have died in the deadliest conflict since World War Two as a result of the scramble for coltan and other minerals key to the functioning of modern technology. Join us in solidarity with the Congolese people and fast from your phone for 6 hours”

With the collaboration of AAM, AWA, ASP, and ASA, AFRICaide is bringing Congo Week to Madison again this year. On Friday October the 23rd, we will have an display of awareness campaign signs on the Lower Bascom Hill all day. On the same day from 12-pm, we will are inviting people to turn off their cell phones to raise awareness on Coltan, a mineral used in many electronic devices. This mineral has caused many Congolese people to be killed since 1996. On Tuesday October 27, we will hold a public screening and discussion of a documentary of S.O.S. Femmes en Danger from 7-9 p.m. in Memorial Library room 126.

For more information on Congo Week, visit http://www.congoweek.org/english/

"stand up for something or you'll fall for anything"...

Thank you for your continued support,
