LJD & all,
I want to apply Lekbi’s wisdom, thus: “It’s a story and at editorial level, we stand by it.”
Having said that, I truly understand the frustration of the many of you, but our interview was only limited to what we knew was speculated about Mr. Sey. Regrettably, none of our associates were at the Gambia-L at the time.
I also concur that there is much to be quizzed on as can be seen from the debate here –given that all being said here is allegedly hanging on his head. I wish that Mr. Sey also will be given the opportunity to read all these threads and reply accordingly while a chance to do so. I think it is a right that he has a chance to defend his position also. What Gainako cannot do is to “hang” any Gambian (In the case of Mr. Sey) by criminalizing the individual before a verdict in a court of law, or established fact by consensus –with certainty and without any biasness or personal differences. Any sober mind will be careful in the usage of the language by saying “alleged” instead of pinning right there, especially if the particular history happened years ago when those of us were not present. To that, Gainako will let Mr. Sey defend himself.
While I thank Mr. Sey for granting Gainako the interview which we solicited for, I extend the same thanks and appreciation to those of you weighing constructively for or against the topic - strong opinions.
The critique over the “softness” in the interview is a strong opinion, but our intention was just an interview and whatever it may cover. One thing many people are not giving him - his promotion of literature, eloquence and speaking-up at a time of need.
The questions now: What is soft, hard or mild? What direction can an interview be? How much disclosure can any interviewee make? Is any single interview capable of addressing everything?
I hope this will pave our way for the next interview. Independence and impartiality will be questioned, if people are dictated on when to be 'hard' or 'soft.'
Sincerely,
YJ.
