My endo is watching things closely, and says
we'll begin replacement when tsh reaches about '4.' Does this sound
about right? >>
It sounds right from an endos point of view. He doesn't have to live with
any consequences. TSH is worthless as an indicator of thyroid status,
especially with Hashimoto's. My son's TSH was around 2 when he stopped
eating, growing, become emaciated and we thought close to death. He went on
Armour Thyroid, his appetite returned to normal and he got much better. Of
course, by that time three years of growth were lost because we had no idea
that lack of appetite and change in rate of lineal growth were primary signs
of hypothyroidism. I discounted the possibility because his symptoms were
different than mine, I couldn't find them listed anywhere and his TSH wasn't
borderline, it was good. Then I found a website by the Magic Foundation that
told me all I needed to know.
My wife has never had elevated TSH. Yet, on aggressive thyroid treatment her
pulse rate which was over 100 and blood pressure became normal. Not to
mention her asthma and other serious health problems went away.
