I am being treated for hypo and adrenal problems. My son is also being treated by Doc Don for the same. I have not been extremely consistent with giving him his second dose of Armour in the evening, as of lately.
I have always had a fear of vomiting.... as I've had children, it has had to improve, but I still have this problem. It has a name... which I didn't know until about 3 months ago. Emetophobia. I have tried to overcome this fear, but I try and avoid contact with germs, especially with my children. My oldest son, who is not hypo, seems to be fine.... he doesn't have a fear of vomiting, watching someone vomit, etc.
Unfortunately, my problem has rubbed off onto my youngest son. I didn't realize this until this week. I will avoid going to someone's house if they are sick with a stomach bug... diarhea, I'm ok with... colds, I'm ok with. I realize I need to overcome this for the sake of my son. But for now, the damage is done.
This week, we were planning on going to Chuck E Cheeses... I've hesitated taking my kids there in the past, because they always manage to come home sick after playing there. I was trying to overcome it and take them there anyhow. I planned on just making them wash their hands well, which I feel is a good idea anyhow, even without this problem. Anyhow, my son came in by me and he was gagging and freaking out that he was going to throw up. We all recently were sick, so I knew it couldn't be that he was sick. I said "you aren't going to throw up honey" I'm trying to be compassionate about this problem.... I usually have a hard time comforting my kids when they are sick with a stomach bug, because I'm such a wreck. I can clean it up, but I think I've concluded it's the fear of watching someone wrench and worrying about 'when' it will happen. So, I was able to relax and lye down with him and he overcame it. Then in the afternoon he worried about it again because he realized he put his mouth on a toy.... I explained that it was ok and he wasn't going to get sick and he over came it. I thought he'd be over it today.... but, no. I decided to do some research.... he keeps asking me when it will go away. I keep trying to tell him you aren't sick with a stomach ache... he doesn't have a stomach ache. He's just worrying. He actually decided to pray about it and I told him, "actually, honey... that is the best thing you can do, because when I have things I can't get out of my head, that is what I need to do to."
I realize this is a problem... I'm not in need of a slap on the hands here. Anyone who doesn't have this problem thinks it just crazy. But.... I realize I need to change for the sake of my son.
So, I decided to look for imformation and found some information on about.com.
Panic attacks in children can be confused with many things. Common imitators are ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, thyroid disease, some prescription drugs, migraines, epilepsy, diabetes, drug abuse, and other psychiatric disorders. There are some research tests which look at the brain which will show certain abnormalities in panic attacks. However, for a variety of reasons these are not in regular clinical use. The main principle is to rule out other problems using a careful medical history, a physical exam, and often certain lab or x-ray examinations. If the history and exam looks like panic attacks and no other cause is found, then a physician assumes it is a panic attack.
Could it be.... that this IS related to thyroid? Which is why my oldest son and my husband do NOT have this problem? I asked my son to PLEASE help remind me to give him his medicine at night... we wrote a note and put it on the refridgerator. I'm hoping along with the medicine, we will be able to overcome this problem.... I'm reading up on it... in hopes to help us both. This problem has gotten a lot better over the years, I can at least talk about throwing up now without feeling physically sick myself. I did have a marked improvement when I was being treated with Cortisone for my adrenals. I'm not seeing Doc Don for my thyroid issues, just my son. And, my current Dr doesn't believe in Cortisone for adrenals, rather DHEA. So... any information or advice would be welcomed, as long as it isn't overly critical. I'm already beating myself up over this...
