I am sure that nothing is true 100% of the time, but I have found that if I
can do a reasonably good job with a patient's thyroid, estrogen /
testosterone / progesterone / cortisol, they seldom need antidepressants.
While I sure miss the free lunches we used to get from Prozac and the rest, I
feel cleaner inside. Prozac is a $3 billion dollar industry, now. Not only is
that bigger than the entire budget of some 3rd world countries, it might be
bigger than the budget of several of them put together.

It seems to have made too many docs lazy. Instead of looking for a reason
that someone feels horrible, there is a real tendency to call everything,
from hypothyroidism to mourning, Clinical Depression. And while the newer
antidepressants are a lot safer than the old ones that I started out with, it
is this very safety that encourages every doc to overuse them. With the
older, more toxic antidepressants, only a Psychiatrist would be likely to use
that family of drugs. With the new ones, most are not prescribed by
Psychiatrists.
