While phenylalanine occurs naturally, it does not occur in nature in the
combination that makes up aspartame or Nutrasweet. There is always
controversy regarding whether it is harmful or not. I used to believe it
was not and I enjoyed drinking Diet Coke on a daily basis as well as
numerous other products that contain aspartame. At the ti
me, I thought I
was saving calories. Now I'm also diabetic so I have even more of a reason
to avoid sugar and excess carbohydrates. However, I now do it without
aspartame.
http://www.dorway.com
is an excellent site for reading about the harmful effects of aspartame as
well as the possible reasons why this product remains FDA approved. From
that site, I learned that aspartame can enhance sugar cravings and since I
was having trouble controlling my weight, I decided to take the "Nutrasweet
challenge". This involves totally abstaining from aspartame for at least
60 days. Supposedly, it deposits in your tissues and does not readily
clear from your system for at least 60 days. I did find that I craved
sweet things less and was surprised to find that all of the back, leg and
foot pain that I had experienced for years was suddenly gone.
About 6 months later, I decided to try Diet Rite soda w
hich was being made
with a new sweetner called Splenda. It seemed to have no adverse effect.
Then I found Diet Rite in cans and took them to work for about a week.
Suddenly, my back was hurting so bad that I could not stand up fully
straight. It dawned on me that this was the way I felt on Nutrasweet. I
re-read the labels on the cans of Diet Rite and found they had aspartame
instead of Splenda. I guess they had not been a high selling item and the
new formulation had not yet been stocked when I bought the cans.
It made a believer out of me that the stories I read on Dorway.com were
true. I have tried nutrasweet again in small quantities and find the same
response each time. Not everyone has the same symptoms but there are many
others. You can't really know if it harms you in any way unless you
totally abstain from it for at least 60 days.
I believe that Splenda may not be a great choice either. Stevia is a
