Hi List Mates,
I truly apologize for getting this summary out so late. I got sicker
before getting better and also have a son with celiac and many severe
food allergies, so I'm now back on my feet and ready to fill you in.
First off, the pain was coming from a contamination. I bought the
regular kind of Van's blueberry waffles...had been eating them 3-4
mornings a week for about 6 weeks and getting so ill. I was triple
checking everything and going crazy and was scared. We have a GF
house, RARELY go out to dinner and take the disease and being GF very
seriously, and yet this still happened to a diligent family. Lesson
being...we're human, we error and we have to be life long
detectives! I believe the boxes of wheat waffles were behind the
gluten free ones in the store and I just grabbed a bunch and ended up
with wheat. The boxes look very similar.
It was a shocking find, but am thankful I found the culprit to the
colorectal pain and put an end to feeling like I was nearing the
other side again (last year I nearly died being contaminated from
flonase and clariten...I was still in the learning phase).
I got so many wonderful and interesting responses.
It seems that this type of pain is rather common among people with
celiac, and happens during a contamination, or happened a lot before
being dx'd.
Several expressed frustrations with dr.'s having no idea what this is
and being scared it was cancer, or something else dangerous.
No one seems to know the route of the pain or why it happens. There
must be a weak area, that responds negatively to the inflammatory
response that happens with a gluten contamination.
People talked about how no pain meds helped, how the pain had
debilitated them and kept them from sleeping (all of which is true,
and I can relate to).
As soon as I discovered the waffles, I started recovery...it took
several days, each day felt better and better, and finally no
colorectal/sacral pain!!!! I started to put back on weight...get my
stamina up and recover.
I did have a few rough days a week or so later...only to realize my
glutenated brain forgot to toss the butter and jelly from when I used
the waffles.
I did scrub my toaster rack and crumb tray with brillo & put it
through the d/w and have been fine ever since.
Yet another crazy thing that gluten can due to our bodies.
Thank you for your responses. It saved me from going under any
unnecessary probing and testing and your responses convinced me it
was gluten and made me look that much harder for the culprit.
Blessings,
Sherri in NJ
