Tragically, the most common treatment I have seen for Grave's Disease in the
USA is burn out the person's thyroid with Radioactive Iodine and let them
languor in Hypothyroidism for the rest of their lives.
Since Graves (Basdow's) Disease is usually self limited, a common treatment
in Europe is to used anti thyroid medications in combination with thyroid
replacement for a year or so, and gradually taper the treatment off. There is no
permanent damage done to the patient, no radiation exposure, and no big fee
for a host of people involved with the treatment. The latter is probably the
reason that the European treatment is not popular over here.
Please get your daughter to a physician who knows enough to look at the
patient, rather than the lab work and who understands that Depression and / or
Anxiety are among the most frequent early symptoms of Hypothyroidism.
Psychiatric problems associated with Hypothyroidism have been well known
since the 1830's, and the definitive paper on the topic was written in 1888 by
the Clinical Society of London. "Myxedema Madness" has been a major cause of
Psychiatric hospitalizations since the institutions began. Unfortunately,
Pharmaceutical companies dominate the mental health sciences; and less
expensive, more effective treatments are seldom advertised or taught.
A prayer that your daughter gets what she needs to get well.
I hope that this helps.
