Another question - if it is an infection, and I am beginning to think it is
because the pain in the crowned tooth above the extracted tooth is getting
progressively worse, are there any alternative treatments other than
antibiotics?

I now occasionally feel pain in the socket where the extracted tooth was and
into my chin area. The right side of my face appears to be slightly swollen
but not to the point that the average person looking at me would know.

I also see a little bit of a white area in the socket that could be puss but
it's hard to tell since I can't see very well that far back into my mouth.

Same way you'd know if the tooth was still there.  Redness, swelling, pain,
that would worsen instead of getting better.  Use a mouthwash of 1 part
hydrogen peroxide and 3 parts water.  Or just plain old salt water.  wash
the mouth several times a day. Stick to soups, broth for a few days...
