The Commander software is the predecessor of Ham Radio Deluxe, which can
talk with many rigs, including the TS-480.
I would think that a 1.8 KHz filter would be quite narrow for SSB, except in
the most crowded contest conditions. In the 480 you have audio DSP filters
that can set bandwidths narrower than those of your crystal filters. The
disadvantage of this scheme is that the AGC will be pumped by signals
outside the audio DSP passband. If I had bought a 480 instead of my FT-950,
I would have skipped the 1.8 and gotten both a 500 and a 270 HZ CW filters
(the 480 can only hold two crystal filters).
On the 950 I can set the IF DSP filter for at least 15 values from 100 to
2900 Hz for CW, SSB or RTTY/PSK modes. Because the shape factor of these
DSP filters is quite steep, I often run CW on 300 Hz narrow and 700 Hz wide
(there is a push-button to select from a narrow and a normal bandwidth for
each mode). For SSB I'm constantly adjusting the bandwidth depending on the
bandwidth of the incoming signal and the conditions, but never narrower than
2.1 KHz.
Have fun.
