Tom,

As Howard points out in a previous post, you can get the 480 to speak the
frequency by pressing Enter twice. This means that you can permanently
assign the PF key on the front of the radio to another function and still
have frequency readout. However, if you like to use the PF key as it is
now, here's another alternative. If you go into the menus and press the A/B
button, the radio will beep twice, at which point you will be in an
alternate configuration. You can now change menu 48 from its current value
of 61 to 67, which will reassign the PF key on the radio to key the
transceiver for tuning. Having made this change to the menu, press the A/B
button again to return to the first configuration, where the PF key speaks
the frequency. When you've selected whichever configuration you want, exit
the menu. I find this approach easier than trying to remember the different
menu settings.

Incidentally, you can assign the PF key to read the S-meter by assigning a
value of 62 to Menu 48. On my 480, it has that function in Configuration 1,
and the Tune function in Configuration 2. I think you're beginning to see
that this is a very flexible and versatile radio.

Steve
