Luke,

You could listen to cordless phones if the tone squelch is off!

900 is getting big here in western Washington state but 440mhz is big here 
too.

I have hosted a 900mhz at my place for years and can tell you the coverage 
Butch mentioned is accurate.  440 travels lots better and 900 meg gets into 
feed line issues with loss.
