Hi Tom and All,

I want to weigh in on this one a little since I did use the TS-480 on the
base station for a while. No, it won't probably compare with an Icom
receiver in selectivity but it works just fine 90 percent of the time for
what you want. With the filtering put in, it performs quite well and is
very selective. I am picky about receivers so I wouldn't just say this.
Also, I used the little half circle mobile mounting plate attached to a
block of wood with L brackets on it to hang the control head under a shelf
for solid mounting and easier use of the buttons.

On the mic and transmit audio situation, there is a problem with the MC-60
which can be easily solved once you're aware of the solution. First, for
some unknown reason Kenwood reversed the mic and system grounds in the
modular plug in the radio. The mic that comes with the rig is wired
correctly but all other Kenwood mics have problems--especially with an amp
on in the shack. I bought one of the MJ-88 8 pin to RJ-45 adapters and had
a friend reverse these grounds and crimp a new connector onto the adapter
cable. One big problem down. The next problem is common to all MC-60A's.
They are susceptible to RFI because the mic case is not actually grounded to
full ground potential but floats slightly above ground. This can be cured
by soldering a short bare wire to the shield pin of the Foster 8 pin plug on
the mic and bringing it back to one of the screws which secure the Foster as
Heil suggests for RFI abatement or you can just run a wire from a screw on
the bottom of the mic through the curly cord and to the ground lug on the
back of the radio. Do this and the MC-60A sounds great.

I hope this helps. Good luck Tom with your varying opinions you are getting
and very 73.

Kevin :)

Well, Anthony has some interesting thoughts here on the TS480.

Would anyone else care to elaborate either pro or con, for those of us who
are thinking of purchasing this radio?

I'm not trying to stir up trouble at all here; just trying to weigh my
decision to purchase this radio, and hoping not to bee seriously
disappointed.
