Jeff,
    By cleaning up and then defragging, the scans will have less work to do 
and probably run faster too.

    When I am in the mood and dont need the computer, I first will empty the 
deleted items folder in Outlook Express then compact all folders in OE. 
Then I do disk cleanup, then defrag.  After that, I run my AV program, then 
Ad Aware, Spybot S&D and Spyware Blaster.  Thats it.
