Hi everyone,
There seems to be some confusion regarding the Codex Standard for Foods for Special Dietary Use for Persons Intolerant to Gluten and the Food and Drug Administration's rule for gluten-free labeling. These standards are not one and the same. Codex standards are established by the Codex Alimentarius Commission which is a jointly run program of the United Nations and the World Health Organization. Countries may choose to adopt Codex standards as their national standard. While the newly adopted Codex standard for foods labeled gluten-free is very similar to the FDA's proposed rule for labeling of gluten-free foods they are not exactly the same. The FDA's proposed rule has yet to be finalized. The FDA rule and not the Codex standard will govern labeling of gluten-free foods in the United States.
Hopefully this helps clear up any confusion. If not both the Codex standard and the FDA proposed rule are explained on my website.
