You know Ken, Throwing all able bodied people into one nasty category is just as ignorant as those who toss disabled people into one lump category. Was your mother an abs, how about Benjamin - if so you just insulted them. Ignorance is a people problem - it is not anyone group sole territory. Vent your ire at stupid people - which has nothing to do with race, religion, national origin or physical abilities - its a mental, home environment and educational thing.
As far as the life guard thing goes - I missed most it - so if they where rude and mean that's unacceptable. However as the Mom of Amber - who did almost drown one summer in NC - caught in a riptide. She wasn't strong enough to swim thru it. And someone had to come out and rescue her - I am sure it would have been helpful for them to know - despite the fact she can swim - her right side is very weak and only helps a little - so any help from her would be one sided.
I wasn't there - every summer she goes with her best friend and her family for a 10 day trip to OBX. The mom and Amber were swimming when they got caught up in this and the mom- ARGH - left Amber out there and swam to shore for help. I got back a terrorized kid. There are no life gurads there - so this was just a kind gentleman who swam out to get Amber. Goddess Bless -
Life guards are responsible for the lives of the people on the beach, as well as their own. And I am willing to bet real money none of them has any experience saving someone who is disabled - maybe its the same or maybe not - but they haven't covered it. I think it would be considerate to simple let them know you can swim and rescueing you would be no more difficult than rescueing anyone else. You never know what can happen - an an ounce of prevention now - can avoid a coffin in the future.
And as Amber would say - That's all I have to say.
