Wow! I am really impressed by the response I got from all of you! I had
about 40 people answer me on this so I apologize if I did not answer all of
your responses but I did read them all.
It is nice to know that other people understand how I feel. Some of my
friends and even my parents do not understand and still think this is a mental
condition.
Anyway I had so much response that I will try to summarize answers to all of
your questions here.
In addition to the tests in my first email, I have also tested negative for Colitis
and Chrohn's disease. I had a biopsy and endoscopy done a few months ago
which was also negative although this was after avoiding gluten since last
March (5 day gluten challenge) and before that since early 2005. However,
the tests above did rule out Chrohn's disease. And I am going to one of the
top-rated hospitals in the country for all of my doctors (Vanderbilt).
I do not have any family history of Celiac Disease...at least to my/their
knowledge although my mom has always had stomach bloating.
I had the Prometheus gene test done, but no others such as Enterolab or Dr.
Fine. And I have not had the RAST Test nor the Whipples test done either.
And I know it is not limited to a wheat allergy because initially in 2005 I tried
avoiding all wheat products only and I was still reacting to products with
gluten in them but without wheat.
I just started taking probiotics (Designs for Health) a couple months ago which
I HIGHLY recommend...best on the market in my opinion. And I always call
companies beforehand to make sure their products are gluten-free (I avoid
generics!). Most of the time this works although the regulations for the GF
label are not stringent enough yet for my sensitivities. I have not had a RAST
test done but I did get a skin scratch test done a couple years ago and again
it tested negative for wheat. And no, I've never had a fungal infection or
bacterial overgrowth.
I told one of my doctor friends about my allergies and although he is not a
specialist in Celiac Disease, he thought my symptoms and sensitivities were
too severe for IBS. Is this the case? Is CD always more severe than IBS?
I was feeling good healthwise 75% of the time until I did the 5-day gluten
challenge 5 months ago. Now I am extremely sensitive. So I know that
eating GF makes me feel better...but the reason I sent out this email is
because my parents are worried I might have something else since all of the
tests have turned out negative so far.
Anyway, I will follow up on all of your advice!
