I recently installed windows Vista on my computer which formally used to run windows XP Professional service pack 2. Unfortunately for me, I did not save some critical data before installing Vista. Therefore I started getting my data back, using the Easy Recovery software.
Later on, I created a password protected account on the system.
On the next startup again, I wasn't able to log on to the desktop because it displayed this message:
Windows was unable to start because the following file is missing or damaged:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
1. I tried to boot the computer, using safe mode but the same message appeared;
2. I tried repairing the damaged file by booting from the Vista CD, but there was no option to perform that action.
Please help me repair the Windows installation in order to continue my files recovery. Thanks in advance.

Depending on the type of restore, how destructive it was, and
the "exact" location the restore wrote "new" things on the
HD,
I think the longer the drive is in use, the less the chance of getting
anything old off of it. (Which I might "assume" was a very small
chance to begin with.)
