Jeff and Listers:
Outlook Express asks you to compact every hundred times that it is opened.
As was said earlier, you really should allow the program to compact messages
to head off the possibility of having your folders corrupted. I compact
every week, which may be overkill, but I'd rather that than to lose
messages.
To Chris, I can't understand what's going on when you are told that "the
folder" is being used by another program". Outlook Express folders are only
used by Outlook Express, and Outlook Express needs to be open in order for
compacting to occur. Perhaps you have a message open; I don't know what the
effect of that would be. I would suggest that you open up your inbox, then
migrate to the "folders" option, then to "compact all folders", and invoke
that. At a minimum, you won't be bothered with the compacting request for
another hundred sessions of Outlook Express.

How often have you been asked if you want to compact? I usually am asked
about every month or thereabouts. I tell it to go a head and that is the
last I hear of it.

Hello,
It also permits the email program to correct any indexing errors. If you
do not regularly compact your email folders, errors will start occurring and
you may, like happened to me several years ago, have your email folder
structure become severely corrupted. Every computer magazine and
knowledgeable expert I have consulted about it have all recommended regular
compacting of your email.

It is just to save computer space, and it usually asks me to do that

Please copy me with your response to this question, since I often
receive the same message to compact message with OE. .
Thanks,
Sandy

Subject: [VICUG-L] outlook express asking to compact messages
Hi:
Is there any way to stop outlook express from asking me if I wish to
compact messages to save space? The problem I'm having is that, most of the
time when I click ok, I'm told that the folder is in use by another program,
it's a real nuisance. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
