I agree, Ken. I think Kerry's remark was totally inappropriate and
wrong - the caliber of the volunteer army has been really high - it's
the extended tours of duty and stretching of resources that has them
do things that smart people wouldn't otherwise be doing at home.
Now I know I will be castigated for saying this but I think we need
to go back to the draft for men and include females. Other countries
make national service compulsory for its young people, and I think
there's nothing wrong with requiring a national service of some sort,
military or non-military so that young people can get job experience
and work for their country.
Presently, a draft would ease the burden on our forces and hopefully
bring a swifter conclusion to our presence in Iraq.
