This is actually two questions. I can answer only one of them.

Some programs do not use the check box feature which JAWS recognizes.
Instead they use a graphic. If the graphic is one number, it shows a check
mark, and if it is another number, it is unchecked.

In this case, you could label the graphic, but then you've only solved it
for that particular application, you haven't solved the problem globally.

The work around I use is to use the JAWS cursor to look at each item in the
list, and note which ones have one graphic number in front of them, and
which have a different number. I then use either the JAWS left mouse click,
or the space bar to click on an item, and note what the number changes to.
If I can identify something I already know is checked one way or the other,
I can then tell when an item is checked or unchecked by the graphic number
in use. If there is no way to know because the entire list is one way or
the other, then I just do trial and error.

I know this isn't elegant, but it does work.

Bill

Subject: [VICUG-L] HELP WITH A JAWS ISSUE

Hi everybody:
I guess this is a JAWS list question really but wonder if somebody could
help me.
I am using Windows XP home and JAWS 7. I need to know whether items are
checked and JAWS doesn't seem to want to tell me. How can I enable jaws to
globally tell me whether items are checked or not?
Thanks.
DOREEN TYLER.
