I did some checking at http://www.gfutah.org/label_reading.htm on Ethanol
which is a component of the flavoring used by Dannon....
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms regulate the labeling of alcohol
products It specifically requires the source be identified when it is derived
from grain as in "Ethanol (distilled from grain)" And if it doesn't say that,
it's made most like from synthetic sources.
The site goes on to say that ALL ethanol is gluten-free.
And "Ethanol (made from grain)" can't be distinguished from distilled alcohol
from other sources. It keeps makers of alcoholic beverages from charging high
prices for something that's not the real thing. It falls outside the
juristiction of the FDA and the labeling law...
Just think of "Ethanaol (made from grain)" as the proper name designed by the
ATF for a g.f. product.
Only food, medicines, and cosmetics fall under the FDA labeling.. Only food
has to comply w/ the Allergen Labeling Law.
How to read rx med labels, check out

There's also a list of g.f. excipents (fillers & binders) online at
www.glutenfreedrugs.com
For information on how to read meat & poultry labels, check out
http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Help/FAQs_Flavorings/index.asp#1
Of course the GF Utah site, mentioned about, is very helpful in clarifying
the impact the Allergen Labeling Law has had on the labeling of ingredients
that could hide gluten previously...
The FDA has a list of ingredients that can be used in cosmetics as well.
One of the cosmetic companies provide a member of our group with a listing
broken down by allergens. I've included it below...
There is lots to learn & keep up to date on when you are dx with celiac, but
it's a small price to pay to regain your health. There are lots of safe (&
inexpensive) commercial products out there that are naturally g.f. and the key to
finding them is knowing how to read the labels.
Enjoy,
Bev in Milwaukee
This a listing on the breakdown by allergen...
