Just sharing. Went to Joe's Crab Shack in Wilmington, DE today...a chain I had not heard of before yesterday. (Check their website for locations.)

I looked the menu up online last night, and it didn't seem promising--lots of fried and marinated stuff, but I was meeting someone there, and I'm not familiar with the area...so I phoned ahead to ask if they could accommodate gluten-free. I spoke with a manager who told me to ask for him, and he assured me that my meal would be prepared the way I wanted. He said not to worry about the menu. Change of plans, I ended up there at lunchtime and a different manager was on duty. No worries. He sat down at the table and went over the menu, and both he and the waitress assured me that he would oversee the food prep. Both understood gluten-free. But it was their attitude that was winning.

Menu has grilled salmon and other fish, steamed vegetables and plain white rice that is made with just water and butter. They also have steamed shrimp and crab legs....even crab legs and corn on the cob on the kids menu. I didn't verify that the corn on the cob was o.k., but I'm sure they'd make it in plain water, if need be. Be sure to request the plain white rice. They have a rice pilaf that has a chicken infused flavoring, which he wasn't sure was gluten-free. He was willing to look, but I was fine with the plain rice. I got the salmon without the glaze or topping...my request.

We were fortunate that the place was empty. That always makes it easier to explain special needs.

I'm going to email headquarters to praise the management and waitress.

This is right on the riverfront, where there is a lovely riverwalk and lots of other restaurants, shops, the Chase Center (stuff like boat expo's), minor league baseball. Wilmington did a good job sprucing up the place.

Lin
