On July 19 I had a low-speed bicycle accident resulting in a
comminuted ("broken, splintered or crushed into a number of pieces"),
compound (one piece of bone pierced the skin) fracture of my left
forearm and other minor injuries. I simply did not see a poorly
marked sharp speed bump, and took most of the fall on asphalt on the
base of my left palm. After three hours in surgery (followed by
three nights in the hospital), 22 screws and two plates now hold my
radius and ulna bones together. No nerve or wrist bone damage,
thankfully, and the surgeon on call in the ER is an arm and hand
specialist.
I was biopsy diagnosed celiac in August, 2001, and have kept GF since
then, supplementing calcium and getting plenty of sunshine &
exercise. Osteopenia that was noted soon after dx had shown
improvement over two subsequent bone scans over 3 years.
The surgeon said he could not tell if bone density was a factor in my
injury, but I am curious, even though it is after the fact.
I'm interested to hear about the experiences from any other
middle-aged male celiacs who have had a bad fracture w/ hardware
installed.
Thanks,
Jack
