Your repeater list should say which tone it is all UK repeaters are ctcss
but I don't know US I think they are the same but don't quote me on that.

Hi Robert;

What I do is add the same PL tone to both boxes.

When I hear the repeater if the repeater re-transmits the tone then, I =
just set the radio to decode the tone.

Hope this helps.

      Still learning. Am adding a few repeaters to my radio for a =
weekend=20
  trip. Using the software from Kenwood for the TH-F6A. The repeater =
list=20
  shows the PL tones but how do I know what kind to select in the=20
  Tone/CTCSS/DCS box? What else do I need to take care of while adding =
the=20
  repeaters?  Thanks.
