  Thanks very much, Joe, for your suggestion.  I'd been trying to use the 
JAWS cursor as well as the PC cursor, but this time I switched to the JAWS 
"invisible" cursor by adding insert+z, and to my delight, I got a message 
that the Norton live update had been installed but I must reboot to have it 
take effect.  So
I rebooted for a third time and Norton's apparently stopped opening a Live 
Update window as well as ceasing for the present to interfere with the 
operation of other software, such as writing e-mail.
