Kendall, that book is classic. It's been over 20 years since I read that book. We don't know why certain things happen, but we can either either get bitter, or we can allow G^d's "loving kindness" change our outlook. Life is basically unfair, and as Scott Peck said. full of suffering. Instead of asking, "Why me?" to the evil in my life, the question should be, "Why not me?"
