Window-eyes can be run from a thumb drive.  This is covered in the manual, and only requires the installation of a small video driver.

As to being a memory hog, I really don't know what you're talking about here.  I have run it successfully under  xp pro on a 256mb laptop.  Although it was a little slow, it was no more than expected considering the piggish nature of microsoft operating systems in general.
