I don't think the audio is that bad on transmit on the 706, the trick is,
you have to set it right. I hear them all day long on ecars when I'm paying
attention and some sound horrible, others sound good, The biggest problem is
you need to run compression with the stock mic and that's what kills it but
if you set it right in the menu and can get away with out the compression,
they sound pretty good. No hifi Kenwood quality audio, but they don't sound
near as bad as the alinco dx70, that thing makes my head feel like it will
explode that thing's so tinny. I've never run anything other than the stock
mic on my 706. I do know someone who runs one with an SM-20 and that sounds
very good. I didn't even know it was a 706 the first time I heard it. I like
my little 706 for what I use it for. Not sure I could use it as an every day
radio, I'd probably grab a 718 if I needed a backup radio for extended use
in a pinch and couldn't afford the TS-2000 at the time, but I hope to have
that in a couple months. My venture in to 900 MHz set me back a bit there
but not too bad, that's a cheap band to get on right now.
