I read about the Green's GF Beers on this listserve (thanks for the
post!) and, decided to see if I could find the Green's gluten free
beers locally as a Christmas surprise for my husband. Unlike
Redbridge beer, the Green's beers are dark and full bodied. As part
of my search, I contacted the US distributor, Merchant du Vin in
Washington State (253-656-0321). I spoke to Craig Hartinger and he
was able to help me to locate two of the three varieties of the beer
at an upscale grocery store less than a mile from our home in
Phoenix, Arizona!!
The beer is made from millet, rice, buckwheat, and sorghum, and is
made in Belgium. They don't label it as gluten-free, but I was told
that is because the FDA doesn't have an official definition for
gluten-free yet. It is clearly labeled wheat and barley free. The
website to check out the beer is http://www.merchantduvin.com/pages/
5_breweries/greens.html
The press release that Craig sent me describes Green's beers as the
only gluten free Belgian Ales available in the United States. It
describes Discovery Amber Ale as medium bodied with subtle caramel
and nut nuances, with a refined herbal hop aroma and finish.
Endeavor Dubbel Ale has a hint of toffee and dark sugar flavor with
the traditional Belgian yeast bouquet. Quest Tripel has a
"relatively light body for a beer of this strength, a spice and herb
nose, with flavors of candied fruit. Aromatic, long finish."
Frankly, I don't know what all this means, although it sounds
delightful. However, we have now had an official tasting of the two
beers I located locally: Green's Endeavor Dubbel Ale (a dark beer)
and Green's Discovery Amber Ale. Even to a beer dummy like me, the
taste was excellent and they are worth tracking down.
The Merchant du Vin website lists distributors in the US and Canada
(http://www.merchantduvin.com/pages/1_about/distributor.html )
I have no financial interest in the beer, the importer, or the
distributor... just want to support excellent gluten free products.
