Managing Editor Alagi Yorro Jallow to address Amnesty Int. forum!!!
The Managing Editor of the Banjul based Independent Newspaper, Alagi Yorro Jallow, will served as special guest speaker to the New York Based Amnesty International world press freedom day celebrations scheduled for May 4th. Mr. Jallow a veteran journalist, who suffered all kinds of persecution under Jammeh’s rule is expected to deliver a master piece speech at the New York forum. With an introduction by Karen Robinson, Director of Human Rights Education, Amnesty International Control of the media - and the consequent influence over peoples' minds - is often sought by those seeking to maintain power. Journalists in many parts of the world are harassed and charged with criminal offences. Newspapers are closed. Come and learn more about Amnesty’s work to defend press freedoms and hear the inspiring story of Alagi Yorro Jallow.
Alagi Yorro Jallow was awarded the 2005 International Press Freedom Award by the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression and the 2004 Hellman Hammet Award by Human Rights Watch for his reportage as Managing Editor of Gambia's The Independent newspaper. He & his staff have faced detention and physical assaults because of their work as journalists. Mr. Jallow also served as a correspondent for both the BBC and the International Press Institute and as a consultant to London-based Article 19.
