Subject: [VICUG-L] an idea, helping the blind buy technology, give me
feedback, folks!

Hi all,
Harry here, and I have an idea, and I need feedback on whether this would be
even possible, or, if I should forget it.
If it is possible, how can we do it?
Here's the problem. As you all know, assistive technology costs the blind a
fortune, and most of us don't have that kind of money, and unfortunately,
all the companies (with the exception of gw micro), will not let us make
paimets. So, I was thinking, why can't local chapters of either ACB, or
NFB, (depending on what group is represented in our communities), set up a
technology fund. The person needing the technology would have to pay the
fund back, but at least, people could make payments. The first month a
payment is not made, the chapter would come and repo the software or
hardware, or both.
So, what do you all think of that idea? Give me all the feedback you can,
but we must do something for folks.
Right now, I have a client who wants to go into broadcasting, and he has no
money for jaws for windows, and the people using the radio station software
only use jaws, and not window eyes.
So, he will never see that dream come true.
So, let me know about this idea, or, how you would modify this fund, or what
rules or stipulations I'm leaving out.
Harry
